DWP visits Glasgow Works

27 July 2010

On the 27th July, Glasgow Works hosted a visit from DWP’s Partnership Director: Chris Guest who is the senior manager responsible for City Strategy within the Welfare to Work section of DWP. Chris was keen to see the Glasgow Works partnership in operation.

A full programme was provided with the morning session giving him the opportunity to meet with some of the Glasgow Works Board and the Senior Management Team to hear of how our partnerships have developed and added value to supporting those most disadvantaged in the labour market.

From there a whistle stop tour was made to Savoy Towers, St. Enoch’s Working and the Glasgow South West Regeneration Agency in Orkney Street. Savoy Towers introduced Chris to NHS Works, a partnership programme which prepares candidates to access employment as Nursing Assistants. This is a partnership between NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde, Glasgow Works, the Local Regeneration Agencies (LRA’s) and Skills Development Scotland (SDS). Next stop, St Enoch’s Working a partnership between Ivanhoe Cambridge, Jobcentre Plus, Glasgow Works, SDS and the LRA’s. St Enoch’s Works is co-ordinated by Glasgow West Regeneration Agency to maximise job opportunities in the St Enoch Centre for Glasgow Works unemployed people who may not otherwise benefit from these vacancies. Lastly, a visit to Glasgow South West Regeneration Agency’s (GSWRA) intriguing venue at Orkney Street which was the former police station now converted to a thriving business centre. This visit focused on the range of positions which GSWRA have developed for young people through the Future Jobs Funds.

The visit provided a wealth of opportunity for Chris to meet with some of the Glasgow Works key partners and the programmes that are being developed and supported, but most importantly it was a great opportunity to meet with the people who are benefiting from our partnership working.
