Glasgow Works Mental Health Strategic Group

The Glasgow Works Mental Health Strategic Group was established in December 2007 in response to the percentage of Incapacity Benefit claimants citing mental health. This equated to approximately 29,000 people at that time. The majority of the claimants experienced mild to moderate mental health conditions including stress, depression and anxiety.

Membership of the group currently includes:

    • Jobcentre Plus
    • Condition Management
    • Greater Glasgow and Clyde NHS, Mental Health Partnership
    • Glasgow Works – New Connections Team and Employer Engagement Team

In 2008, the group met on a number of occasions to consider progress in Glasgow, consider future planning and continue to build upon previous work of the Mental Health Partnership and Equal Access to Employment. The group undertook various activities linked to Glasgow Works 3 objectives of streamlining, delivery and employer engagement and in 2009 developed a paper outlining the progress in Glasgow around employability and mental health and the various policy developments needing consideration e.g. “Realising Ambitions: Better employment support for people with a mental health condition”. The group is currently meeting to scope out an employment and retention model aimed at continuing to embed employability within mental health services and improving access to mainstream employability support hence taking forward some of the recommendations from “Realising Ambitions”.
